Summary : The field of professional re-adaptation for the mentally ill lecks a theoretical framework despite the fact that its practice is traditionally considered as being part of the labor psychopathology domain and, according to a recent thesis on the social, historical and scientific origins of the labor psychopathology, may even correspond to the latter's inaugural moment.

The debate over that thesis'hypothesis, concerning the unlikely encounter between psychiatry and labor, offers the opportunity to evoke the relation the two from a "postfoucaltian" authors point of view : it is then possible to demonstrate that if the re-adaptation of the mentally ill continues to develop outside pre-established knowledge, as it has over the last fifty years, it is due to the fact that re-adaptation draws from the social mission that is at its origins by means of the social relations of labor care, of which the professional-patient relation in an integral part.
